Even a few weeks ago was the first time
SlutWalks caught my attention according to Wikipedia SultWalks started in April
3, 2011. They have appeared in Toronto , Ontario , Canada , and now occurring
globally such as South America and India . The point of the
protest is to bring attention to explaining or excusing rape due to the
appearance of women. The SlutWalks also want to put an end to rape culture. It
started in Toronto when an officer
stated that to remain safe "women should avoid dressing like sluts".
During the SlutWalks marches some women choose to wear clothing that give off
their impression they are sluts. There can be speakers, workshops, live music,
sign-making sessions, leafleting, open microphones, chanting, dances, martial
arts, and receptions or after-parties with refreshments. Some women choose to
speak openly about their rape and many organizers are victims of rape. These
marches invite all ages and genders to take part in the protest.

I have talked about the marches
with different individuals, all have said they like the idea and some
say that they could have come up with a better name. Personally, I
understand their perspective but I like the name. I do not think it
is to reclaim but to caught attention. Also, it uses a term that
often identifies women who have been raped. Also, whether or not the women
was consider a "slut" or not women are often told that in
order to protect yourself from rape you have do or not allowed to engage in
certain behaviors that will give off the impression you were asking for it, or
you should have expected it. It is not ok to victim blame or make it any target
feel as if their abuse was their fault. No, one ask to be abused
and their are no signs that a rapist gives off that says
Hey you, I want to rape you tonight.
